Would buying LPs and then converting them to MP3 defeat the purpose of having an LP in the first place?
I love music and I’m tired of CDs and buying in to the digital revolution and feeling guilty for downloading songs, so I’m thinking of just buying vinyl records from now on. I know vinyl sounds MUCH better than any other format, but the thing is I ALWAYS need music and because MP3s and CDs are so assessable, I was considering converting the vinyl to those formats for when I’m on the go. Would doing so defeat the purpose of buying LPs in the first place?
I own many linear feet of shelf space of LPs – collected since the 1960s. Before CDs were invented, we converted many into cassette tapes (yes, we skipped the 8-track thing . .). These LPs now live in my basement – and a project for a dreary Winter is decide which of these need to be ripped to mp3. I doubt I will ever save them to CD – but there are quite a few things that I would have to listen to via turntable ( yes, we still have a very good one connected) – but would I want to?
If you do not already own LPs, I see no need to rush out an buy any – unless you are into the cover art, so like John Cusack’s character in “High Fidelity” – really groove on the analog warmth.
More importantly – I am in the process of databasing all my CDs – thousands – and using a barcode scanner to do it. It is hardly accurate – it seems that most reference databases online do not care at all bout classical music.
