Please help me select a brand of vinyl windows?
I need to replace 11 windows in my house. I’ve had three bids- they all pitched the brand they recommend as “the best in the industry”. I just don’t know who to believe. I live in beautiful, sunny southern California where it mostly hot and rains two weeks out of the year. The temperature hardly ever dips below 50 degrees.
Should I choose:
A) Simonton 7300 Series @ $9,000
B) Jeld-wen Builder’s Series @ $9,500 or
C) Anlin Coronado Series @ $11,500
Please explain why especially if you have one of these brands. Thanks.
The only brand I am familiar with is Jeld-wen. I have installed many single hung JW’s here, along with JW doors and haven’t had any trouble with them. I would guess that all three are of decent quality. The biggest thing about installing new windows is the installation. If they are improperly installed, I don’t care how good the window is, you won’t be happy. Base your decision on the installation, not the windows.
All that being said, it seems to me that you are getting ripped off royally on your quote. An installed window shouldn’t cost nearly $1000 each to install. These companies are buying these things for probably around $200-300 each at the most (and probably less) and a good installing team should be able to install all 11 in a day or day and a half. In other words, someone is taking you for a sucker. In the Home Improvement sales industry, you are (behind your back) called a “mooch” or a “lay down”.
Ask around for the names of some good contractors who have a lot of experience installing windows. Stay away from the replacement window companies. Sorry, but I used to work for one and I know the inside info on this. The window salesman is there to get you to sign for the highest price he can get you to affix your signature to the dotted line for. If he can’t get you to sign, he will make up story after story to justify dropping his price until you actually sign. Most homeowners don’t stand a chance against a good home improvement salesman.
Hell, for $11,500, I will PERSONALLY come to California and install your windows and I live in Florida.
