Where can I get unbiased information about mold remediation? I think my contractor is…?

I had a fire and the water damage created a huge mold problem. We brought in a contractor who spent 10 days “remediating,” during which he tried to get an extra $3000 from me because he said he didn’t realize that the water and the mold leaked down to the cellar. We paid him $10,000 and the insurance company paid him $5,000. He brought in an inspector at the end and now they are telling me more work needs to be done because there were particulates in the air, possibly brought on by the contractors outside installing vinyl siding on the day of the testing — banging on the walls and opening windows. They want more money to go in and clean and test again, and all work stopped on the house until they finish. But won’t the dust just be back the next day, as soon as the contractors go back to work and/or open windows again? I live in New Jersey; there are always particulates in the air. I wish there were some government or other source I could ask about this.

People who are licensed with the state to assess or remove mold damage have to carry around a special ID that they can show you, and if you want to see a list of the companies that are licensed, you can go to the Texas Department of State Health Services website. Just know, if you have a mold problem that’s larger than a few square feet, it’s illegal for anyone to repair it without reporting the job to the state and going through an assessment process.

Here is the New Jersey Dept of Health and Senior Services “black mold” page. It has good links, but unfortunately it looks as though they don’t regulate their inspectors. Still, maybe you can get a second opinion. They have a pdf file of microbiological labs, although they don’t “endorse or qualify” any. If you get someone from there, hopefully they at least have an actual lab and the capability of doing the proper tests.
