Ingredients used to cleanup Algae on Vinyl Siding?
What shelf ingredients can be used and mixed safely to remove the green stain on my vinyl siding. I had it done professionally and the guy told me what they used but I did not write it down ( Oops ) . It seems like Dawn dish soap and bleach were in there. I believe there were only 3 common items in their mix.
For years, I have used ONLY Clorox Unscented bleach. I called their 800 customer support number for the dilution instructions, and it’s been so long I have forgotten the numbers. Give them a call and they’ll explain the process to you. Their toll-free 800 number is usually on the bleach bottle label.
However, a very small amount of bleach is used in relation to the amount water, and the working mixture is applied [I used a garden type one gallon pump sprayer] to a small area [about 3 feet by 3 feet] at a time. This is to prevent drying out before you remove the solution.
The best I recall, you leave the solution on the Algae or mildew for just a few minutes [that KILLS the little beggars] and then rinse off before it has time to dry.
I also recall that they were EMPHATIC that you thoroughly WET DOWN all plants and the ground around them to prevent damage from the bleach. I used cheap plastic tarps to cover my plants EVEN AFTER I followed the wetting down instructions.
THEN, after that killing process, I just used a stiff broom to scrub the dead mildew/algae off.
Although I did not use any soap or detergent, Dawn Dish-washing Liquid is SO MILD that it is used to remove thick, sticky CRUDE OIL from wildlife and pets at the Veterinarian’s office. So, IF you want to use Dawn to help remove the algae/mildew, then it will do no harm, AND since a little goes a long way, I suggest not more than a half-teaspoon per gallon of working solution.
