Outstanding Afrio – American Men – Morgan Freeman
In the next several days, we will tell the stories about the outstanding Afrio-American men. First, we tell about Morgan Freeman.
Always capable to evoke huge praise from either critics or audience with his brilliant portrayal in every role he takes that covers diverse range of human characters, Morgan Freeman arguably has made his way to be one of the most respected figures in modern U.S. cinema.
Morgan Freeman was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on the 1st of June, 1937. These were harsh years, with the Wall Street Crash leading through to the Dust Bowl, and then the war in Europe. His parents worked in a hospital, trying to maintain a family that eventually included six children – five boys and one girl. When Morgan was very young, like so many other workers in the South, his mum and dad migrated to Chicago, seeking work in the factories. Morgan went to live with his grandparents in Charleston, Mississippi, where his earliest memories were formed and where he still owns a home.
Growing up, the Freeman family moved around quite a bit between Greenwood, Mississippi, Gray, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois. Morgan got into acting at a young age after he starred in a school play when he was eight. Then, at the age of 12 he won a statewide drama competition.
Although Morgan had the chance to attend college on a drama scholarship offered by Jackson State University, he decided to work for the U.S. Air Force as a mechanic instead. After his stint in the Air Force he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1960’s.
The commanding yet gentle African-American leading man has given some distinguished stage performances in Manhattan before and after he found fame in the movies. It is a career that began in the mid-1960s, when Freeman appeared in an off-Broadway production of The Niggerlovers and with Pearl Bailey in an all-African-American Broadway production of Hello Dolly! in 1968. He went on to have a successful career both on and off-Broadway, showcasing his talents in everything from musicals to contemporary drama to Shakespeare.
Although his first credited film appearance was in 1971’s Who Says I Can’t Ride a Rainbow?, Freeman first became known in the American media through roles on the soap opera Another World and the PBS kids show The Electric Company.
Here, we just tell some basic information about Morgan Freeman before he really becoming famous. Tomorrow, we will tell more.
