Is tile, linoleum, or vinyl normal for Great Rooms in Homes?
While searching for a home to purchase, I’ve come across homes with one of these vs. carpet in the Great Rooms. Is this a cover up of some problem ~ like damaged flooring or water problems? Or is this a normal practice for something else ~ maybe cheaper than carpet or hardwood?

I don’t like linoleum in any room. Tile, like quarry tile or like little 12″ squares of tile like in a kitchen.
Many very fancy homes have tile in the foyers. Maybe the people have little boys and don’t want the floors scuffed, or dogs who are old and incontinent. There could be a good and valid reason, but you can always ask. We have marble in the front hall. It’s pretty and it takes mud and snow pretty well. I’d prefer hardwood to carpet anytime, but it can get scratched up. Tile can be very nice and expensive too, and some carpet is junk. Ask.
