Whoever heard of CDs and MP3s decades ago? The Vinyl record monopolized the music industry for almost 80 years. Today’s generation will know of it, perhaps from DJs in discotheques who seem to be the only ones using them.
A lot of us have old vinyl records lying around our house from the days of our fathers and grandfathers. Have you ever thought they could be worth something? Here is an insight into their value.
Basically it is the demand for the old record which determines its price. If it was sold widely during the time it was released, the current value will be less. Another factor could be the amount of records that were pressed for that particular album during that time. Suppose the number was few and the record happens to be part of a limited edition, the value could go up to thousands of dollars provided of course it is in good crisp condition. The popularity of the artist plays an important role and the type of collection it fits into will also be sized up for determining its value.
Vinyl records from the 1950’s and 60’s are very much in demand, especially those that have manufacturer’s paper sleeves attached. Some have picture sleeves and if found intact will get 3 times more value than the rest. An average of $10 dollars is the rate for rock and roll and blues from the 50’s, of course with some crossing $100.
High values are attached to R& B collections from the 50’s because chances are that their distribution was less during that time and very few records were in the market making them a rare collection. Ardent fans of singers who want to own entire collections of albums brought out by their favorite stars would give anything to own a rare vinyl record thus hiking the prices.
