Does anyone still play 1200’s?
Sure I see them in videos with DJ’s that are not really doing anything. Does anyone still get down on the 1’s and 2’s? It seems that CD’s and MP3 are taking over, I want to know if anyone still gets down on 12’s. I don’t mean using Serado or Tractor scratch, I mean playing vinyl and getting into the grooves.
It makes sense that people have moved beyond it, a record bag as I remember it is very heavy and you can fit an entire library on a matchbook. But there is something about being able to manipulate vinyl with only skill and not electronic and digital correction to make it sound good.
Yes. Most proper, professional DJ’s still use vinyl and 1200’s (or 1210’s) to some extent. Dubplate culture is still alive and well. Serato isn’t really cheating either. You’re doing exactly the same thing as you would with proper vinyl, but it’s just time-coded to use MP3’s. If you want to scratch with it, etc, you still have be just as talented. There’s no digital correction involved. A lot of the most famous turntablists are making the transition to Serato, simply because as you said, a hard drive and a laptop is a lot easier to carry than a mountain of vinyl.
Technics announced recently that 1200’s and 1210’s are being discontinued. It’s a great shame and presumably it will have a negative effect on real DJ’ing. I hope it doesn’t mean the death of vinyl. Hopefully some music equipment manufacturer will pick up on the gap and design another classic turntable for DJ’ing. There’s definitely a market for it. Otherwise people will just gradually have to make do with MP3’s or shell out a small fortune for a battered old pair of second hand Technics.
